A self-imposed challenge to keep the scammers on the line for as long as possible, and test their ability to spot when they are the ones being scammed
This book isn’t going to be turned into a movie, nor will it ever grace our screens as a mini-series. It is nothing more than a brief culmination of telephone calls conducted by scammers, bent on taking the British public for as much as they can. Whether it’s trying to convince us that “someone has stolen your internet”, or you need to pass over your bank details for that glorious windfall from accident you may or may not have had, these crooks will say whatever is necessary to pry your account info or credit card details from you.
This project originally started as a way to keep them on the line for as long as possible, hoping that they’d eventually reach the end of their shift and my time would have been spent preventing someone else from being ripped off. As time went on, though, the mundane aspect of wedging a phone in the crook of my shoulder while I kept working started to wear thin.
That’s when everything changed. That’s when I decided to start playing them at their own game, trying to throw as many awkward situations or absurd circumstances at them to see how far I could take it before they cottoned on and hung up. Some were pleasant, some left the conversation suddenly, and some were David… we called him David The Furious.
This book won’t change your life, but it may make you smile for a couple of hours. It may even prompt you to keep these scammers on the line a bit longer next time they call you, and maybe you’ll stop some dear old person from being robbed of their savings.
